Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has revealed that he is contemplating a presidential bid but would step aside if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to run for the office.

The governor made this statement on Thursday after a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) urged him to consider contesting for the presidency.

Governor Mohammed expressed his respect for Jonathan’s experience and leadership, noting that the former president would be well-suited to manage the country’s affairs if given the mandate again. He emphasized that his own ambition to run for the highest office in the land would be secondary to Jonathan’s potential candidacy.

“Goodluck Jonathan has the experience and the capability to do a good job for Nigeria,” Mohammed stated, acknowledging the former president’s track record and the importance of effective leadership for the nation’s progress.

This declaration highlights the fluid dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape, where alliances and respect for seasoned leaders often influence decisions on presidential ambitions. As the 2027 election approaches, political figures like Governor Mohammed are carefully weighing their options and considering the broader implications of their candidacies.

“With regard to your call for me to present myself, I am still contemplating my chances as the leader of the opposition.

“I know there are good leaders within the PDP, especially my boss Goodluck Jonathan.

“I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for leadership of this country, unless he decides not to run.

“If we can persuade him to come forward, I will support him with my blood. Out of modesty, he is still not ready. I hope you will meet him and encourage him to run.

“He will do a better job because he has the experience. We know the prices of things; we know the level of inflation.

“During Jonathan’s regime, he was inclusive, addressing issues like the Almajiri system and creating initiatives for unemployed youths.

“His leadership recruitment was exemplary. We need leaders like him—young people with energy, foresight, and drive,” he said.

Mohammed further stated that his criticisms of the administration of President Bola Tinubu are part of his responsibility to help put the country on the right path.
