Born on October 18th, 1959 in Adiabo, Odukpani LGA, Cross River State, to Elder and Mrs. Edet Okon Otu.

Prior to earning a bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, he completed his elementary and secondary education in his hometown of Calabar.

Career

Prior to entering politics, he worked in banking and subsequently the petroleum industry. He engages in farming as well.

Politics

From 2003 to 2011, Bassey Otu represented the Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for two terms.

He held the positions of Vice Chairman of the House Committee on National Population, Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), and Member of the Committees on Power, the Ministry of the Niger Delta, Inter-Parliamentary Relations, Inter-Intra Party Relations, Environment, Water Resources, and Defense during his time as a representative.

As a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Otu was chosen in 2011 to serve as a senator for the Cross River Southern Senatorial District.

After defecting to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2016, he held the position of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance and subsequently of the Senate Committee on Banking and Other Financial Institutions. He was also a member of the Committee on Navy, Power, Petroleum, and Water Resources.

His influence in the Senate was deemed by many to be unparalleled to this day, and because of his reputation for social progress and human empowerment, the Buhari Youth Organization supported his reelection.

Otu was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) board in 2018.

He was named the All Progressive Congress’s (APC) candidate for governor in 2022.

He emerged victorious in the 2023 governorship race and took the oath of office on May 29, 2023, as the governor of Cross River State.
