Rescue yourself from my case, Nnamdi Kanu tells Justice Nyako

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has requested that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja recuse herself from his ongoing trial.

Kanu expressed a loss of confidence in the court, accusing the judge of failing to obey a Supreme Court order.

During the resumed hearing, Kanu voiced his concerns openly in court, prompting Justice Nyako to agree with his request.

She stated that she had no issue stepping down from the case and would send the case file back to the Chief Judge for reassignment.

Kanu, who insisted on addressing the court personally, ordered his counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, to remain seated while he argued that the Supreme Court had raised questions regarding the jurisdiction of the Federal Court to try him based on his alleged broadcasts.

He also referenced the Supreme Court’s ruling, claiming bias on the part of Justice Nyako.

Earlier in the session, Adegboyega Awomolo, counsel for the Federal Government, informed the court that the prosecution was ready to proceed with the trial but acknowledged that it could not move forward under the current circumstances.

Kanu, who was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021, faces terrorism charges and has been held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) following an earlier bail jump. He continues to plead not guilty to the charges.

More details shortly.
