Operations shut as Rivers community protesters storm Agip HQ, seek N100bn compensation

Members of the Mgbuosimini community in Rumueme Kingdom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, held a peaceful protest on Monday, blocking entrance to Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) Limited operational headquarters.

Hundreds of community residents gathered outside Agip’s main gate as early as 6:00 a.m. to express their displeasure, essentially suspending operations at the complex.

They wanted better benefits and pay from the oil corporation.

Acting Chairman of the Mgbuoshimini Community Development Council (CDC), Weli Nyeche, addressed the protesters, highlighting long-standing issues neglected by the company and demanding immediate action.

Among the community’s demands was the termination of all contracts awarded to a group allegedly led by Daddy Chukwu, wanted by the Nigerian Police Force for multiple murders, including that of the former Community Development Council chairman. They also demanded compensation for damages caused to the community over the years.

Additionally, the community demanded fair representation in meetings with NAOC management and compliance with court judgments regarding traditional authority in the region.

Stakeholders emphasized the need for NAOC to respect the community’s rights and refrain from actions that undermine national security or promote conflict.

As of the report filing, NAOC had not issued an official response to the community’s allegations and demands. However, a source hinted at a forthcoming reaction from the company.

The protest underscores the frustrations of communities affected by oil operations and highlights the importance of dialogue and fair treatment in addressing grievances.
