In response to growing criticisms from stakeholders and a formal demand by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has significantly reduced the fees for Chairmanship and Councillorship forms for the upcoming local government elections.

The original fees, set at N5 million and N1 million respectively, have now been slashed to N1 million for Chairmanship aspirants and N200,000 for Councillorship candidates.

In a press statement released Wednesday night, Governor Otu emphasized that his administration would cover the balance of the fees to the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC), ensuring compliance with election regulations.

He also acknowledged the economic challenges facing citizens due to federal government reforms.

The governor reiterated his commitment to inclusivity, people-centered policies, and ensuring a transparent electoral process.

The decision was well-received by IPAC’s State Chairman, Engr. Edet Effiom, along with over 15 other party chairmen, who praised the governor’s democratic values and pledged continued support for the administration as long as it upholds principles of good governance.

This intervention comes as CROSIEC prepares for the local government elections scheduled for October 25, 2024.
