Import Duties: FG to ground over 60 private jets Today

In a final effort to recover billions of naira in unpaid import duties, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) is set to ground more than 60 private jets owned by influential individuals and companies.

The enforcement begins today, with the NCS instructing the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency to deny flight clearances until the outstanding duties are settled.

This action follows a verification exercise conducted between June and July 2024, which revealed that many private jets have evaded import duties, exploiting regulatory loopholes.

Among the luxury aircraft identified are high-end models such as Bombardier Challenger 604 and Bombardier BD-700 Global series, with some costing over $70 million.

Eleven private jet owners have already received notices, with 55 more set to receive theirs today.

Despite attempts by some operators to lobby the Presidency, no interference has occurred, prompting many to start settling their dues.

The move is expected to generate over N260 billion in revenue for the government.
