Sir Alex Ferguson to step down as Manchester United ambassador

Sir Alex Ferguson will end his role as Manchester United ambassador after the current season, concluding a decade-long tenure since his retirement as manager in 2013.

The 82-year-old has been a key figure as a global ambassador and club director, remaining a regular at games and in the directors’ box.

The decision follows an amicable discussion between Ferguson and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The move is part of Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting measures to invest more in the team, which has already led to over 250 staff redundancies, saving around £10 million annually.

Ferguson, United’s most successful manager, won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, and multiple other trophies during his reign.

Despite stepping down, he will always remain welcome at Old Trafford. This decision comes amid United’s financial struggles, with the club reporting a £113 million net loss last month and nearing the Premier League’s loss limit.

The club is currently 14th in the Premier League, and manager Erik ten Hag’s future remains under scrutiny, although he is set to lead the team against Brentford this weekend.
