Former House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan was released from the Kuje Correctional facility on Tuesday morning after serving a five-year jail term.

Lawan, who previously chaired the House probe panel on the oil subsidy regime, had been sentenced to seven years in prison for accepting a $3 million bribe from oil magnate Femi Otedola.

The sentencing was handed down by Justice Angela Otaluka of the FCT High Court in Apo, who found Lawan guilty on all three charges brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

In addition to the prison sentence, Lawan was ordered to refund $500,000 to the federal government.

More to come.
