Roberto Mancini part ways with Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has dismissed Roberto Mancini as the head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team after a challenging 14-month period.

The Italian manager, who joined the team last August under a lucrative four-year deal worth approximately £21 million per year, struggled to produce consistent results, securing only seven victories in 18 matches.

The decision, described by the federation as a “joint agreement,” follows growing discontent among fans and a string of underwhelming performances, including a recent goalless draw against Bahrain.

During the match, Mancini was seen exchanging words with frustrated supporters—a visible indication of mounting pressure.

Initially, Mancini’s arrival generated optimism, especially after his successful stint leading Italy to the 2021 European Championship title.

However, his tenure became increasingly challenging, not only due to unsatisfactory results but also his vocal criticism of the influx of foreign players in the Saudi Pro League, which he claimed restricted opportunities for local talent.

The federation extended gratitude to Mancini for his contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors. His departure now leaves Saudi Arabia seeking a new coach to lead the national team forward.

“Three years ago, all the Saudi players played every game. Today, 50 to 60 percent don’t play in the games. This is our primary problem,” he stated.

With his departure, the Saudi Football Federation is expected to act swiftly in securing a new coach who can reinvigorate the national team and refocus efforts on its World Cup ambitions.
