Abuja court grants N10m bail to #EndBadGovernance protesters amid disturbing courtroom scenes
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to 72 defendants arrested for their involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria.
Presiding Judge Obiora Egwuatu set bail at N10 million for each defendant, with conditions requiring two sureties.
One must be a civil servant at grade level 15 or above, with a verifiable address within the court’s jurisdiction, and the other a parent of the defendant.
The courtroom scene underscored the protesters’ plight as many, especially minors, appeared ill and malnourished during the arraignment. Due to space constraints, some young defendants stood outside the designated area, and several collapsed from apparent exhaustion. These incidents prompted a temporary halt in proceedings as courtroom officials worked to restore order.
Following the disruptions, the prosecution requested that the four minors who collapsed be removed from the charges. The remaining defendants pleaded not guilty to charges, which include treason. The 76 individuals were detained during August protests in Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano, organized to address widespread grievances over security and economic challenges.
The bail conditions have sparked public interest, with many viewing the court’s decision as a critical test of justice for the detained youth, whose health and welfare continue to raise concerns.
