Biden, Harris congratulate Trump, as process for transition of power begins

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have formally acknowledged Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.

In a phone call with Trump on Wednesday, Biden extended his congratulations, emphasizing his commitment to a smooth transition of power and to promoting unity across the nation, according to an AFP report.

The White House confirmed Biden’s invitation for Trump to meet soon, underscoring his dedication to a seamless transfer of responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Vice President Harris, the Democratic candidate, also reached out to Trump, stressing the importance of a peaceful transfer and her hope for a unified country under his leadership.

Biden commended Harris for her historic campaign as the first Black woman vice-presidential candidate, further highlighting her role in fostering an inclusive message throughout the election.

Harris is set to address the public later today at Howard University, where she will formally concede and discuss her commitment to a smooth handover.

Trump secured his path to the White House after surpassing 270 electoral college votes, officially becoming the 47th president-elect of the United States.

In a statement, he acknowledged the support of his followers, promising to “fight for America” as he prepares to take office.
