Tension as court sets to deliver verdict on suit challenging new ‘Kano Emirate Law’

A ruling on a motion to declare the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law 2024 null and void has been scheduled for Thursday, June 20, by Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman.

Aminu Babba Danagundi, also known as the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, was represented by the legal team that filed this motion.

The motion was brought forward by Danagundi’s counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, after the court dismissed an oral request for a stay of proceedings.

This request was made by the Kano State House of Assembly’s counsel, Eyitayo Fatogun, SAN, following the court’s decision to assume jurisdiction over the matter. Fatogun expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling and noted that an appeal had been filed with the Court of Appeal, alongside a motion to stay proceedings.

Fatogun requested an adjournment to await the appeal process, a position supported by the Attorney-General of Kano State’s counsel, A.G. Wakil.

However, Ojukwu countered, arguing that the authorities cited by the defense were merely procedural rules, not judicial decisions.
