Obasanjo calls for INEC’s chairman sack, others
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other key staff members.
Speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University in the United States, Obasanjo emphasized the urgent need to revamp Nigeria’s electoral commission.
Describing the 2023 elections as disastrous, Obasanjo stressed the importance of rebuilding trust in the nation’s electoral system.
He recommended that the terms for INEC’s leadership be reduced to minimize the risk of appointing partisan individuals and to curb political influence and corruption.
“As a matter of urgency, we must ensure the INEC Chairperson and their staff are thoroughly vetted,” he stated.
Obasanjo called for the establishment of credible leadership across all levels of governance federal, state, local, and municipal to restore citizens’ faith in the electoral process.
