Google has unveiled its 2024 Year in Search report for Nigeria, showcasing the trends, personalities, and topics that captured the nation’s interest.

Notable figures like popular cross-dresser Bobrisky, former Health Minister Beta Edu, and Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali dominated searches this year.

Bobrisky’s Controversial Year

Bobrisky, born Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, emerged as the most searched Nigerian, driven by a string of controversies. The socialite gained widespread attention after his April 2024 arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged naira abuse.

His sentencing to six months in prison without an option of fine sparked debates about where he would be housed.

Rumors about his luxurious prison conditions, including access to a furnished cell, television, and a phone, further fueled public curiosity.

Another wave of interest came in October 2024 when Bobrisky was arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) while attempting to cross the Seme border, spending time in custody before being transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).

Beta Edu’s Political Scandal

Former APC National Women Leader and Health Minister Beta Edu was another widely searched figure.

Her tenure, which began under President Tinubu’s administration in May 2023, ended abruptly in January 2024 following a ₦585 million corruption scandal.

Public interest surged as speculations swirled about her possible reinstatement due to her alleged closeness to the First Family.

Stanley Nwabali’s AFCON Heroics

In sports, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali gained popularity for his outstanding performance during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

Despite Nigeria losing the final to the host nation, Nwabali’s goalkeeping skills earned widespread admiration. His personal tragedy, the recent loss of his father, also contributed to increased searches about him.

Trending Topics and Interests

The Year in Search highlighted a mix of political, economic, and cultural interests:

News: Topics like the U.S. elections, Nigeria’s new national anthem, and the national grid dominated searches.

Music: Boy Spyce’s “I Don’t Care”, Ayra Starr’s “Ozeba” and “Commas” were among the most searched songs, with Nigerians seeking lyrics to songs like “Ogechi” and “Omemma”.

Movies and TV: Films like “A Tribe Called Judah” and TV series such as “Supacell” topped entertainment searches.

Recipes: The culinary world saw an unexpected interest in the Pornstar Martini recipe, among other dishes.
