Tension as vehicle in Benue Governor’s convoy crashes, kills one
A tragic accident involving a pilot vehicle in the convoy of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has left one person dead and another injured.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area of the state.
Sources reveal that Governor Alia, who hails from Vandeikya, was in his country home to celebrate Christmas when the accident happened.
The crash took place along the dusty Ihugh road, where the driver of the pilot vehicle reportedly lost visibility due to heavy dust, leading to the unfortunate collision.
Further details about the identities of the victims or the response from the governor’s office are yet to be disclosed.
According to the source who spoke to our correspondent on the phone, “The governor was going to the church, and his vehicle was in the front, followed by other vehicles. One of the vehicles in the convoy veered off the road because the driver couldn’t see clearly due to dust on the untarred road and rammed into a motorcycle.
“One person died, and others sustained injuries.”
When contacted, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, said that the incident happened several minutes after the governor had arrived at the church.
He admitted that the vehicle involved was one of the vehicles in the governor’s convoy but explained that the vehicle was not in a convoy when the incident happened.
According to Iorpev, “The vehicle was alone on a mission when it got involved in an accident, and this was caused by dust.
“The road is very dusty, and there was an oncoming vehicle in the opposite direction. While the vehicle tried to avoid the oncoming vehicle, it rammed into a motorcycle, which caused the accident.”
Though the media aide did not speak on the casualty, he regretted the incident.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, said the case was yet to be reported to the command.
