‘Most Nigerian songs today are short-lived’ – OAP Do2dtun

Popular On-Air Personality Oladotun Kayode, popularly known as Do2dtun, has expressed concerns about the declining longevity of contemporary music.

He attributes the trend to an oversaturated market driven by haste and an excessive focus on streaming numbers.

Do2dtun highlighted that many artists prioritize quantity over quality, rushing to release music in a bid to maintain visibility in a competitive industry. This, he argues, often compromises the depth and lasting appeal of their work.

“Most songs made in the last five years lack staying power. It’s not because they aren’t good enough, but the market is oversaturated with tracks made in haste,” Do2dtun remarked.

“It’s become a race to be heard – a numbers game rather than a focus on value.”

Do2dtun, known for his candid views on Nigeria’s entertainment scene, noted that the industry’s rapid growth has led to compromised artistry.

He pointed to several factors contributing to this decline, including lazier artistes, reduced lyrical depth, a focus on quantity over quality, and songs that fail to inspire lasting memories.

The Nigerian music industry, which has gained international recognition with global stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, has witnessed a surge in releases as streaming platforms dominate distribution.

However, Dotun warned that the current trend risks flooding the market with disposable music that won’t stand the test of time.

He urged stakeholders to prioritize substance over numbers to preserve the rich heritage of Nigerian music.
