Heavy Police presence at Rivers PDP Secretariat, as crisis deepen
The Rivers State secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been sealed off by police operatives following a leadership tussle within the party.
The action comes after a State High Court in Port Harcourt issued an interlocutory injunction restraining the party’s chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, and his executive members from functioning in their roles.
In response, PDP stakeholders loyal to Governor Siminialayi Fubara held a quick congress on Wednesday, appointing Hon.
Nname Robinson Ewor as the acting chairman of the party.
Ewor, who also chairs the Governing Council of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic and serves as Rivers West Senatorial Vice Chairman of the PDP, is tasked with leading a caretaker committee to stabilize the party until fresh congresses are held.
The newly inaugurated leadership announced its intention to assume control of the party’s secretariat but faced resistance on Thursday afternoon when heavily armed police officers secured the premises along the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The police reportedly acted on intelligence suggesting a potential clash at the location, deploying multiple patrol vans to prevent access to the facility.
In the interim, the new PDP leadership has shifted its operations to an alternative location to engage with party members.
