In terms of nominal GDP, it is the 39th largest economy in the world, the second largest in Africa, and the sixth most populous nation overall.

It shares borders with Benin to the west, Cameroon to the east, Chad to the northeast, and Niger to the north.

More than 250 different ethnic groups call it home, and English is the official language of the nation. These groups speak over 500 different languages, including Yoruba, Igbo, Fula, Hausa, Edo, Ibibio, Tiv, Efik, Ijaw, Kanuri, Itsekiri, and Idoma.

The population of the nation is divided between Muslims, who are primarily found in the north, Christians, who are primarily found in the south, and traditionalists, who are found among the various ethnic groups.

Nigeria is endowed with a diverse topography that includes large deposits of natural resources like coal, petroleum, limestone, and natural gas. It also features climates that range from arid to humid equatorial, coastal swamps in the south, tropical forests, woodlands, grasslands, and semi-desert in the north.

Nigeria is a federation of 36 states, with Abuja serving as the nation’s commercial capital and Lagos as its largest city. The Federal Capital Territory is situated there.

Nigeria operates under a federal presidential system, with the President serving as the head of state and being elected every four years along with a council of governors who oversee the affairs of the states throughout the nation, following its independence from the British on October 1, 1960, and the dissolution of the first through third republics.
