EPL: Maguire’s header seals thrilling 3-2 win for ten-nan Man United side against Ipswich

Manchester United battled back from an early setback and a red card to secure a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, with Harry Maguire’s powerful header proving decisive.
United found themselves behind just four minutes into the match after a costly mistake by goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroonian rushed too close to Patrick Dorgu, whose attempted clearance ended up gifting Jaden Philogene an easy tap-in.
The home side responded quickly, leveling the score when Ipswich captain Sam Morsy inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while trying to prevent Rasmus Hojlund from connecting with Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick. Moments later, United went ahead as Maguire and Diogo Dalot saw their efforts saved before Matthijs de Ligt fired the ball into the roof of the net.
Despite seeming in control, United’s task became harder when Dorgu received a red card just before halftime following a VAR review of his reckless tackle on Omari Hutchinson. Ipswich immediately took advantage of the extra man, with Philogene’s curling cross finding the net after Onana misjudged Liam Delap’s movement.
However, United regained their lead early in the second half when Maguire rose to meet Fernandes’ corner and powered a header past Alex Palmer, securing Ruben Amorim’s third home Premier League win.
United’s Mixed Performance Amid Onana’s Struggles
Manchester United’s defensive issues were evident, particularly with Onana’s costly errors. His miscommunication with Dorgu for the opening goal left Amorim visibly frustrated. Yet, the team showed resilience, bouncing back from a poor start much like they did against Everton at Goodison Park.
Dorgu, despite his red card, appeared to be the solution to United’s long-standing left-wing-back problem, while the team’s ability to score from set-pieces was another positive takeaway. United’s three goals from dead-ball situations marked their best return in a Premier League match since September 2016.
However, there are concerns, particularly with Rasmus Hojlund’s continued struggles in front of goal and Onana’s inconsistent form, which needs urgent improvement.
Ipswich’s Defensive Struggles Continue
Ipswich remain winless in 2025, their worst start to a calendar year in the top flight since 1970. Defensive frailties have been a major problem, with the team conceding 24 goals in their last eight league matches.
Despite some promising individual performances from Liam Delap and goalkeeper Alex Palmer, Ipswich’s inability to cope with aerial balls and set-pieces is proving costly. Their poor defensive record raises serious concerns about their chances of avoiding relegation back to the Championship.
With time running out in the season, manager Kieran McKenna faces a tough task in shoring up his side’s defense to turn their fortunes around.
