Birth
Douye Diri, a native of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, was born on June 4, 1959.
Education
His education began at Okoro Primary School in Sampou and ended in 1977 at Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School in Kaiama, where he received his First School Leaving Certificate.
He subsequently went to the College of Education in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, and Government Secondary School, Odi, in Bayelsa, where he graduated with a National Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1985.
In 1990, he earned a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in political science from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Career
Before entering politics, Douye was employed as a classroom teacher in a number of Rivers State public schools.
Under the administrations of Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and President Goodluck Jonathan, he was named executive secretary of the Center for Youth Development and commissioner of youth and sports in Bayelsa State.
Diri was a member of the University of Maiduguri’s governing council from 2000 until 2012.
In 2012, he served as the chairman of the Bayelsa State PDP Disciplinary Council.
After being promoted to the position of Principal Executive Secretary in August 2012, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff at Government House.
He held this role until 2014, when he resigned to run for the House of Representatives seat representing the Federal Constituencies of Kolokuma, Opokuma, and Yenagoa.
He was chosen to serve in Nigeria’s 9th National Assembly in 2015, representing the state of Bayelsa and its Bayelsa Central senatorial district.
He ran for governor of Bayelsa in 2019 as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate. On February 14, 2020, he took the oath of office as the governor of Bayelsa State after winning the polls.
Douye, the state governor, was ordered to resign by an Abuja tribunal on August 17, 2020. On October 2, 2020, the court of appeals in Abuja overturned this decision, though, and he continued to serve as the state’s governor.
Family
Douye Diri, a devout Christian, is married to two women; Mrs. Gloria Ebibomo Diri, the first lady of the state, and Barr. Mrs. Patience Diri, his second wife.
Controversy
It was revealed in August 2021 that Diri and his associates had pushed their way past security barriers at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in an attempt to board the first-ever United Nigeria Airlines flight from Lagos to Yenagoa.
