Cholera outbreak: 3 die, 10 hospitalized in Benue

According to Dr. Henry Ijabo, the epidemiologist of Benue State, the state is currently struggling with a cholera outbreak that has resulted in the deaths of three individuals in the past two weeks.

Dr. Ijabo, in a briefing with reporters, revealed that out of the 13 reported cholera cases, 10 patients are currently under medical observation. He emphasized the critical need for residents to cease open defecation, a significant contributor to the spread of the disease.

Notably, cholera is not part of the routine immunization programs, and there is no available vaccine for it.

The outbreak has predominantly affected the Agatu, Ado, and Otukpo local government areas within the Benue South senatorial zone. Dr. Ijabo stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of hygiene to curb the spread of cholera in these regions.

Benue State, particularly the communities in the Benue South Senatorial district, has been struggling with cholera outbreaks for over a decade.

The repeated incidents highlight the urgent need for improved sanitation and preventive measures to protect the health of the population.
