Happening Now: ECOWAS leaders meeting holds in Abuja
The 63rd Ordinary Summit is currently taking place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, as President Bola Tinubu’s duration as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS expires on July 9, 2024.
The summit is attended by the presidents and representatives of 12 member states. The West African leaders are expected to nominate a new chair to oversee the bloc’s operations for the next year during the meeting, which commences at 1 p.m.
In any case, there are indications that leaders could extend Tinubu’s tenure in order to help him with the opportunity to potentially restore Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso into the bloc. Further details will be provided at a later time
