Nigerian Police detains Abuja Man who climbed mast to protest economic hardship
A man, Shuaibu Yushau, has been detained by the Nigerian police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja on Monday morning.
The man was spotted at the summit of a radio mast, attempting to commit suicide. SaharaReporters earlier reported that the man was seen at the summit of the mast in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, on Monday morning, contemplating to commit suicide.
This was seen in a video as a suicide note left behind by the man was also found.
Relevant agencies were deployed to the scene to rescue him.
The rescue operation was carried out by the Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency and Federal Capital Territory officials.
However, Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT command in a statement on Monday evening said the suspect was presently in police custody and in a stable condition.
Following a distress call from concerned citizens about a young man who climbed a very high mast with a placard at ASO Radio in Katampe at about 09:10am, the operatives of the FCT Police Command swiftly mobilised to the location.
“With much professional persuasions from the police operatives, the man later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau was prevented from taking his own life. He claimed to have been observing the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it. Suspect is presently in police custody and in a stable condition.
“Further development will be communicated in due course,” she added.
