Tragedy as centuries-old trees falls on traders in Edo, Kill four, injures several others
A tragedy occurred at the Jattu Market in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday, as trees that were estimated to be over a century old collapsed during an incident of heavy downpours.
Four individuals lost their lives while many others were injured. In the torrential downpour sellers were arriving at the market to set up their stands when the event happened between 8:00 and 8:30 in the morning.
Witnesses reported that windstorms accompanying the downpour uprooted the trees, trapping several people who had sought shelter under them or in nearby shops.
Mr Marvellous Zibiri, Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, confirmed the tragic event, stating that he was informed by his vice chairman about the incident during the rainfall.
“Four individuals lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. They have been transported to the mortuary, while those injured are receiving treatment in hospital,” Zibiri confirmed in a phone interview with Daily Trust.
He expressed gratitude that the casualty count wasn’t higher, attributing this to the early morning rain which deterred many from arriving at the market before the trees fell.
“This market is the largest in Edo North, attracting traders from across the state and neighbouring areas. The trees, which have stood for over a century, were uprooted unexpectedly by the wind,” Zibiri added.
While extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, Zibiri assured that the council would repair the damaged structures and remove all old trees from the market area.
