Femi Gbajabiamila, a member of the Yoruba tribe, was born on June 25, 1962, in Lagos State, to Mr. Lateef and Mrs. Olufunke Gbajabiamila.

He began his elementary education at Mainland Preparatory School and finished his secondary education at Igbobi College in 1973.

After graduating from the University of Lagos in 1983 with a degree in law, he was called to the bar in 1984.

Femi went on to earn his doctorate from Georgia’s John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, USA. In 2001, he passed the Georgia bar exam and opened an Atlanta legal practice.

During his time in the United States, he actively participated in Bill Campbell’s election to the position of mayor of Atlanta.

Career

After earning his legal degree, Femi worked for Bentley Edu & Co., a Lagos-based legal firm, before starting Femi Gbaja & Co.

Politics

On the platform of the now-defunct Alliance for Democracy, Gbajabiamila was chosen to represent the Surulere Constituency in Lagos State in 2003. He was re-elected in 2011.

In the 7th National Assembly, he also served as the House of Representatives’ Minority Leader.

He oversaw the House of Representatives ad hoc committee that was looking into allegations made by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) regarding the debt of “Zenon Petroleum & Gas Limited” and “Forte Oil Plc” totaling 140.9 billion naira, or roughly $1 billion.

With 283 votes to his opponent Mohammed Umar Bago’s 78, Gbajabiamila emerged victorious as the 9th National Assembly House of Representatives’ speaker.

He was regarded as an exceptional legislator due to his devotion and commitment to national issues.

On June 14, 2023, he announced his resignation from the House of Representatives after twenty years in the legislative branch to take a position as President Bola Tinubu’s chief of staff.
