A mass prison break in Niger has resulted in the escape of hundreds of individuals, including Boko Haram terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers.

The breakout occurred at Koutoukalé prison, located near Niamey, Niger’s capital.

On Thursday, a violent mutiny erupted, overpowering the prison guards and allowing inmates to seize weapons and vehicles as they fled.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and explosions around midday, prompting a rapid response from security forces.

Despite their efforts, the inmates had already taken control, breaching armored gates, barbed wire, and trenches to facilitate their escape.

This prison had previously been targeted twice by terrorists, though those attempts were unsuccessful.

Following the escape, Niger’s Interior Minister issued a radio alert to all governors, advising village chiefs and religious leaders to report any suspicious activity. In response to the situation, a curfew has been imposed in the Tillabéri region, and heightened security measures are in place throughout the River Niger region.
