BREAKING: Scores feared trapped as another building collapses in Abuja
In a tragic incident on Saturday morning, a section of a two-storey residential building in Abuja collapsed, trapping several individuals beneath the rubble.
This comes barely 24 hours after a school building collapsed in Plateau State.
The building, formerly a hotel named Al-Hilal and later converted into a hospital, had become a residential apartment after the hospital vacated the premises. It is located on Cupid Road (Sultan Dasuki Way) in Kubwa, next to the well-known Cupid Hotel.
Emergency responders and security personnel quickly arrived at the scene. However, rescue operations were delayed due to the absence of cranes, which had not yet arrived by 8:45 am, nearly two hours after the collapse.
Despite these challenges, two people were transported to a nearby hospital, and a few others managed to escape unaided. One survivor, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted hearing cracking noises around 7 a.m. and immediately fled after stepping outside.
The incident underscores the urgent need for improved building safety regulations and rapid emergency response capabilities in the region.
