Stray bullets hits residents as Military kill two gunmen in Abia army unit
Two unidentified gunmen were fatally shot by soldiers during a tense confrontation while attempting to attack an army unit in Aba, the bustling commercial hub of Abia State.
The skirmish, lasting over 30 minutes, tragically involved innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.
Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, shared details of the incident with journalists in Umuahia.
Ekeoma revealed that the gang had planned to seize arms from the army unit to use in various attacks across the city.
He said their attempt was thwarted by the security agents who successfully neutralized two of the gang members.
Ekeoma commended the soldiers for their gallant efforts but expressed regret over the collateral damage.
“Though the soldiers displayed a high degree of gallantry, some innocent passersby were unfortunately hit by stray bullets,” he said.
He reassured the public that the government and security agencies are actively working to maintain law and order in the state.
“The criminals are not having a free day; many of them are being captured and continue to be picked up from various locations. The government is doing a lot to ensure the security of lives and property in the state.
“There are certain operations and investigations that remain undisclosed to the public to ensure that collaborators and sponsors are brought to book,” Ekeoma added.
The incident has heightened concerns about security in Aba, with many residents calling for increased measures to protect civilians from the fallout of clashes between security forces and criminal elements.
