BREAKING: Veteran Nigerian singer, Onyeka Onwenu, passes away
Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away.
The beloved artist reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
An eyewitness at the event confirmed the tragic news, stating, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.”
Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, was more than just a singer. She was a politician and rights activist, having served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Onwenu’s legacy will be remembered through her numerous songs, including the memorable “Wait for Me,” a duet with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade.
As of the time of this report, her family has not yet issued an official statement regarding her passing.
