Saint Lucia’s sprinter, Julien Alfred stunned the favorite Sha’Carri Richardson to claim the gold medal on Saturday, making history as she clinches the Caribbean nation’s first ever medal at the Games.

Alfred’s victory was monumental, not only because it marks her first ever Olympic medal but also because it’s the first time Saint Lucia has ever won a medal at the Games.

The young sprinter, who is just 19 years old, ran an impressive time of 10.72 seconds to claim the victory over Richardson, who had been heavily favored to win the event.

Alfred, who had never finished on the podium at a major outdoor championships prior to Saturday’s final – conjured a superb race to win in 10.72sec as the USA’s Richardson took silver in 10.87sec and compatriot Melissa Jefferson won bronze in 10.92sec.
