The Enugu State Government has issued a mandate requiring all churches and mosques in the state to remove outdoor loudspeakers and implement soundproofing measures within their worship centers within the next 90 days.

This directive is part of a larger effort to tackle the persistent issue of noise pollution across the state.

The decision was made public following a stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday, which included representatives from Christian and Muslim communities, media practitioners, and government officials.

During the meeting, Mr. Uche Anya, Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, outlined the new regulations aimed at reducing noise disturbances.

Mr. Anya stressed the importance of these measures, noting that the excessive use of external loudspeakers in places of worship has contributed significantly to the growing problem of noise pollution.

He called for the immediate removal of these loudspeakers and the installation of soundproofing in worship centers to mitigate the impact on surrounding neighborhoods.

This policy is part of a broader urban renewal initiative launched in 2023, which also targeted noise pollution from nightclubs, beer parlours, and other entertainment venues, particularly those located in residential areas.

The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents by addressing environmental concerns.

Mr. Anya revealed that his office has received over 1,000 complaints related to noise pollution over the past year, reflecting widespread frustration among residents.

He emphasized that the disturbances have had a significant negative impact on the well-being of individuals living near these noisy establishments.

The Enugu State Government’s new mandate represents a decisive step towards creating a more peaceful and livable environment for all residents, ensuring that worship and entertainment activities can coexist with the comfort and tranquility of residential areas.
