Nigerian actor Uzor Arukwe has addressed the controversy surrounding his role in Omoni Oboli’s hit film Love In Every Word.

Arukwe, who played Odogwu Obiora in the movie, has faced criticism from some viewers, particularly male audiences, who argue that his character reinforces the stereotype of Igbo men as “simps” due to his lavish spending on his partner, Chioma.

Despite this backlash, many others, especially female viewers, have praised the film for portraying an ideal romantic relationship. Supporters argue that the character’s actions reflect genuine love and generosity rather than weakness.

Arukwe’s response to the criticism underscores his commitment to storytelling, emphasizing that his portrayal was based on the script’s vision and not a broader social statement.

One user on X, Himp2million, remarked: “Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is liked only by ladies who have always had the illusion of an odogwu that’ll spend his last dime on them.”

In response to the criticism, Arukwe clarified that caring for one’s partner and investing in them is indicative of responsibility rather than weakness.

He wrote: “Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man… How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?”

This is not the first instance of Arukwe facing criticism; in 2023, he was accused of overemphasizing his Igbo accent in Funke Akindele’s film “A Tribe Called Judah.”

Despite the criticism, Arukwe remains committed to demonstrating his talent and versatility within the Nollywood industry.
