AFCON 2025: We can defeat Super Eagles says Benin captain Mounie
Benin Republic captain Steve Mounie has expressed confidence that the Cheetahs can replicate their previous success against the Super Eagles as they gear up for a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match.
The Cheetahs emerged victorious over Nigeria in June with a 2-1 win at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, a triumph that has boosted their morale for the upcoming rematch.
The two teams will once again face off at the same venue, with Gernot Rohr’s side looking to even the score.
Mounie, however, remains optimistic, asserting that his team has the ability to overcome their neighbors once more.
The match, scheduled for Thursday, promises to be an intense showdown as both sides aim to secure their spots in the AFCON tournament.
“I remember that in June, I gave them the example of my former club. When I was with Stade Brest, we were able to stand up to big teams in the French championship,” Mounie told a press conference.
” I told them that we could do the same thing against Nigeria. We are capable of looking them in the eye. That’s what we will have to do tomorrow (today). Be actors in this match and not just spectators.”
The game will kick-off at 8pm Nigeria time.
