AFCON Qualifiers: CAF imposes $50,000 fine on Libya for misconduct against Benin

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken decisive action against Libya, slapping the nation with a $50,000 fine and ordering two home matches to be played without spectators.

This comes in response to incidents involving supporter and official misconduct during Libya’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin on November 18 in Benghazi.

The sanction is part of ongoing controversies surrounding Libya’s conduct in the AFCON qualifiers.

In October, Libya faced backlash for allegedly mistreating Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The Nigerian team’s aircraft was redirected to an unsafe airport, causing severe delays. The chaos led to the cancellation of the match, with CAF awarding three points to Nigeria.

Additionally, CAF addressed another issue in its latest ruling, dismissing Guinea’s appeal to disqualify Tanzania from the 2024 AFCON.

Guinea had claimed that Tanzanian substitute Ibrahim Ame wore a jersey number (26) not listed on the official team sheet, but the appeal was rejected.

CAF’s firm decisions underscore its commitment to maintaining discipline and fairness in African football.

However, CAF’s disciplinary committee found no basis for the disqualification claim.
