Army take over Anambra community as gunmen ambush, kill two soldiers

Gunmen fired a truck carrying about five Army officers on their way to a location in Ogwu-Ikpele town, Ogbaru Local Government Area in Anambra State, killing at least two of them.

According to an eyewitness, the event occurred about 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday and injured one of the cops, while the Army has taken over the village and there are heavy gunfire in the region.

Our correspondents gathered that the fleeing gunmen, laid ambush for the soldiers at Amaja axis of Ogwu-Ikpele, took them by surprise by attacking them before fleeing into a nearby bush.

According to the eye “Five Army officers conveying oil production workers from Ogwu-Ikpele to Umunzarabia location, were ambushed at Amaja area of Ogwu-Ikpele by yet to unknown gunmen, two people were killed in the process while one person was injured.”

“As we speak now, Army officers have taken over the whole of Ogwu- Ikpele, with heavy shooting going on in the community. No part of the community is safe, there is fear that the Army will embark on reprisal attack.

The Anambra State Police Public RelationsOffice, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not confirm the development. He said the state police as command was not yet aware of the incident.

The Army through its spokesman in the state, Lt. Col. Jonathan, when contacted did not confirm or deny the attack but promised to get back, but as at the time of filing this report, he has yet to do so after. He did not respond to repeated calls and messages to his phone line.
