Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall steps down from role

Arsenal Women’s head coach Jonas Eidevall has resigned after a difficult stretch that saw the team fail to secure a win in their last three matches, including a heavy 5-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and a 2-1 loss to Chelsea.

Following the recent losses, the club’s focus will now shift to appointing a new head coach, with Renee Slegers taking interim charge for upcoming fixtures, starting with a Champions League match against Norwegian club Valerenga.

Eidevall, who joined Arsenal after a successful tenure at Rosengard, achieved notable milestones, including back-to-back trophies and a second-place finish in the WSL during his first season. However, despite winning the League Cup in his second season, the team struggled to maintain form, finishing third in the WSL and facing early exits in the Champions League.

His departure comes amid mounting pressure from fans and media, with visible calls for his sacking evident during the team’s recent performances. Eidevall leaves Arsenal with a commendable 70% win ratio, having won 49 of the 70 matches he managed, second only to Joe Montemurro and Laura Harvey in terms of win percentage among managers with at least ten games in charge.

As Arsenal seeks a new head coach, potential candidates include former Manchester United manager Casey Stoney and ex-Arsenal striker Kelly Smith, among others.
