Former Senate President David Mark has raised serious concerns over the worsening security situation in Benue State, warning that residents might be forced to defend themselves if government authorities fail to protect them.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Paul Mumeh, on Sunday in Abuja, Mark described the unrelenting attacks on Benue communities as senseless, tragic, and completely unacceptable.

He lamented that the persistent killings and destruction of property across various communities in the state have pushed the situation to a dangerous tipping point. According to him, if urgent action is not taken, citizens may have no other option than to resort to self-help for survival.

“This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. Government must rise to its responsibility, or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” Mark stated.

The former Senate President emphasized that the primary responsibility of any government is to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens, adding that any failure in this regard amounts to a gross disservice. He called on the federal government to urgently step up efforts to protect Nigerians, stressing that no one should be left at the mercy of armed attackers.

Mark also urged the Benue State government under Governor Hyacinth Alia to intensify its peace-building and security operations across affected communities. He encouraged traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to collaborate with security agencies to fish out those responsible for the violence.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Benue, Mark appealed for unity and resilience, asking residents to stand firm and refuse to be intimidated. He, however, cautioned them against taking the law into their hands, reminding them of the need to remain law-abiding and peaceful even in the face of adversity.

“This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. Despite the ongoing provocations, we must remain law-abiding, stay united, and uphold the enduring spirit of being our brothers’ keeper,” Mark concluded.
