Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Yamtake, a recently resettled community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, leaving two soldiers and an undisclosed number of civilians dead.

The assault reportedly took place late Thursday night around 11:15pm. Security and local sources confirmed that the attackers stormed the Yamtake military base before reinforcements could arrive from Gwoza.

A military source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “We are waiting for the reinforcement team to return, but we learnt that two of our men and other civilians were affected. I advise we wait until they return.”

Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South), who has been in touch with the affected community, described the incident as tragic.

“It is unfortunate that our people in Yamtake village came under deadly Boko Haram invasion last night (Thursday).”

“It’s one of the communities that received its IDPs recently, they were resettled by Borno State Government,” he said.

He further stated, “It is very sad that two soldiers paid the supreme price, while an unspecified number of innocent civilians were among the casualties. May their gentle souls rest in peace.”

Ndume, however, praised the military’s efforts in containing the attack.

“Let me also commend Brig. Gen. Nasir Abdullahi, the Brigade Commander 26 Task Force and his gallant troops for their unwavering sacrifices and doggedness in repelling several attacks, especially those targeted at Gwoza town,” he said.

According to the senator, the terrorists attempted to advance into Gwoza town after attacking Yamtake, but were successfully repelled by troops.

He also highlighted that troops have regularly laid ambushes around Gwoza, preventing insurgents from overrunning the council headquarters.

Ndume expressed concern over the repeated attacks across Borno’s senatorial districts in the past month.

“Several communities in Borno South, North and Central have witnessed deadly Boko Haram attacks without confrontation. The situation is worrisome,” he warned.

He called on the federal government to establish an Armed Community Defence system to assist the military.

“Men of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), hunters and vigilantes have been doing their best, but they have limitations.”

“They only carry den guns and sticks, making it difficult to confront the terrorists,” he noted.

Ndume also renewed his call for the deployment of Technology, Equipment, Arms, Ammunition, and Motivation (TEAAM), stating that it is the only way to end the decade-long insurgency in Borno and other parts of the country.

This latest attack follows a series of deadly incidents linked to Boko Haram.

On April 12, 2025, eight passengers were killed and over 17 others injured when a commercial vehicle hit a landmine planted by the terrorists along Damboa-Maiduguri Highway.

Earlier this year, on January 24, 2025, Boko Haram fighters attacked the Malam-Fatori military base, killing 22 soldiers, including a commanding officer, and destroying several military assets.

On March 24, 2025, suspected members of Boko Haram and ISWAP targeted Wajiroko and Wulgo bases, resulting in the deaths of at least four soldiers and destruction of critical infrastructure.
