BREAKING: Court grants Dele Farotimi N50m bail in defamation case
An Ekiti State Magistrate Court has granted human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi bail of N50 million in a defamation case filed by legal luminary Afe Babalola.
Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, disclosed the development on his X handle on Monday.
“Dele Farotimi was granted bail of N50 million naira, with a surety who must own landed property. The case was adjourned to January 29, 2025,” Sowore stated.
Farotimi’s case has drawn significant attention, with activists and legal groups criticizing his arrest and detention. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) previously argued that criminal defamation was decriminalized under the Criminal Law of Lagos State and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2021.
