BREAKING: Dim Uche Okwukwu elected President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo
Dim Uche Nnam Okwukwu, a renowned activist lawyer, has been elected as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide during the organization’s convention in Port Harcourt.
In a statement issued by the returning officer, Dr. Achi Achi, Okwukwu was returned unopposed, with the General Assembly of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide describing his emergence as a product of consensus and progressive movement within Igboland. Delegates from the South-East and the diaspora, alongside over 200 cultural groups, participated in the historic election.
In his acceptance speech, Okwukwu expressed gratitude to the delegates for the trust placed in him. He pledged to defend the interests of the Igbo people globally, uphold the organization’s constitution, and work towards unifying fractured elements within the Igbo community.
“I humbly accept the enormous responsibility imposed on me to lead the Igbo race at this moment in our history. I shall live up to their high expectations,” he said.
Okwukwu highlighted key priorities for his tenure, including engaging the Federal Government for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and addressing grievances to bring closure to issues affecting the Igbo nation. He also vowed to work towards restructuring Nigeria and fostering unity among the Igbo people.
Additionally, he announced plans to collaborate with federal and state governments to modernize Igbo infrastructure, including the dredging of Port Harcourt ports and other waterways to boost industrialization. Okwukwu further committed to advocating for the creation of Anioma State and additional states for the Igbo people to ensure equitable representation.
He emphasized the importance of modernizing the Igbo language, making it a global language for commerce, culture, and technology. He also pledged to incorporate Igbo communities in Benue, Edo, and other regions into the Ohanaeze framework.
