The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, the West African editor for The Conversation Africa, after detaining him at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday morning.

Soyinka, who was previously the pioneer editor of the BBC Pidgin service, was detained upon his arrival from the UK.

Initially, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya stated that he was unaware of Soyinka’s arrest, but later confirmed that the journalist had been detained at the request of “another agency.”

Soyinka’s release followed the intervention of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, an organization that advocates for media freedom and the protection of journalists.
