In the early hours of Friday, a fire broke out at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road in Ogba, severely damaging part of a two-storey building.

The fire, which started around 2:20 a.m., affected Flat 5 in Block 21, a section of a three-storey building housing 16 two-bedroom flats.

Preliminary investigations by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical surge in the children’s room, leading to the complete destruction of the room and significant property damage estimated to be worth millions of naira.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, commended the prompt and coordinated response of LASEMA’s Lagos Rescue Team (LRT), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Their efforts were instrumental in quickly containing and extinguishing the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.

“Fortunately, there was no loss of life or injuries sustained in the incident,” Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu confirmed. He also mentioned that the affected residents and other occupants were educated on the safe use of electrical appliances to avoid future incidents.

As of 5:00 a.m., emergency responders were still on the scene, ensuring the situation was fully under control. This incident underscores the critical importance of electrical safety and vigilance in residential buildings to prevent such tragedies.
