Three policemen were reportedly killed by suspected gunmen during a violent confrontation in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The assailants also set the officers’ vehicle ablaze in the early hours of Thursday, October 3.

While the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the deaths of two officers, a resident told The Nation that three policemen were actually killed in the attack.

The tragic incident adds to the ongoing wave of violence and kidnappings that have gripped the area over the past year.

In a statement issued from Awka, Ikenga disclosed that the Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with the Joint Security Forces (JSF), has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

He said: “Joint Security Force, begins manhunt operation on armed men who murdered two police operatives on investigation activities in the early hours of today at Uruagu, Nnewi North local government area.

“Preliminary information reveals that the armed men started shooting sporadically on sighting the police operatives and threw an improvised explosive into their operational vehicle.

“Unfortunately, two of the operatives paid the supreme price while the vehicle caught fire.

“Given the above, the command calls on members of the public especially the eyewitnesses and others to aid the ongoing Police operations in the area.”
