BREAKING: National Mosque Abuja appoints first Igbo Imam, Prof. Ilyas Usman

The National Mosque Abuja management board has approved the historic appointment of Prof. Ilyas Usman as one of its Imams.

Prof. Usman, an esteemed Igbo academic and Muslim scholar, will serve alongside the existing Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in the rotational conduct of Juma’h and daily prayers.

He is set to deliver his inaugural khutbah (sermon) today, October 18, 2024, marking a significant moment as the first Igbo to hold this position.

Prof. Usman, a renowned scholar and the first Professor of Arabic in Igboland, will contribute to the mosque’s religious activities, including the Friday khutbahs, which are delivered in Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo.

His appointment has garnered praise from the Southeast Muslim community, with the South East Muslims Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON) extending their congratulations.

In a statement, SEMON, represented by Dr. Suleiman Afikpo (Ag. National Chairman) and Ustaz Sirajuddeen Ugwu (National Executive Secretary), praised Prof. Usman’s scholarly excellence and prayed for his success in discharging his sacred duties with wisdom and humility.

They also acknowledged the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for fostering inclusiveness and promoting unity within the Ummah.

SEMON expressed hope that Prof. Usman’s appointment would uplift the Igbo Muslim community, showcasing their dedication and contributions to Islam in Nigeria.

This prestigious role highlights Prof. Usman’s unwavering commitment to Islamic scholarship and service, marking a new chapter in the representation of Igbo Muslims at the national level.
