Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed once more, leaving many parts of the country without power.

The collapse occurred around 6:18 pm on Monday, October 14, 2024, causing a complete loss of electricity generation across the grid.

Reports show that power generation fell from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 pm to 3.56GW by 6 pm, eventually hitting 0.00GW at both 7 pm and 8 pm, effectively cutting off electricity nationwide.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid collapse in a statement, notifying customers of the system failure and explaining that this has led to the widespread power outages currently being experienced.

Efforts to restore power across affected areas are expected to commence once the grid is stabilized.

This latest collapse has reignited concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with many citizens and businesses frustrated by the frequent blackouts.

“Consequently, due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the EEDC stated in the statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh.

The Abuja Disco also said, “Dear Valued Customer, Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas.

“Rest assured, we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding.”
