The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun for appointment as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This recommendation follows the imminent retirement of the current CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who is set to step down on August 22, 2024.

If President Tinubu approves the recommendation, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria, following in the footsteps of Mouktar Aloma, the first female to hold the position.

In addition to this significant recommendation, the NJC has also proposed 28 candidates for appointment as judges of state courts and one candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

These recommendations were made during the NJC’s 106th meeting, which was chaired by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

The NJC’s Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, released a statement on Thursday detailing these developments, with more information expected to follow.
