Cricket World Cup: Nigeria defeats Scotland in warm-up match
Nigeria’s U19 Women’s Cricket team secured an impressive 7-wicket victory over Scotland on Wednesday in a warm-up match ahead of the ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup.
The warm-up games, organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), aim to provide participating teams with on-field experience before the tournament officially begins on Saturday in Malaysia.
The match, held at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur, saw Nigeria winning the toss and choosing to field first.
Their decision proved effective, as they restricted Scotland’s batting and chased down the target with ease.
Nigeria’s pace bowler, Lilian Ude, began the onslaught and ensured there was no respite for the Scots, claiming 3/15.
Ude was backed by the efforts of spinner Adekunle Adeshola 2/15 with opening bowlers Peace Usen and Muhibat Amusa grabbing a wicket apiece.
The Nigerian fielding outfit restricted the Scots to 67/10 in 18.2 overs.
Captain Piety Lucky led Nigeria in the chase, finishing 28 not out from just 16 balls, hitting three sixes, with Victory Igbinedion’s 25 off 41 balls ensuring the African side finished 64/3 in 11.3 overs.
The seven-wicket victory would boost the team’s confidence as they head to the World Cup with their first game against Samoa on Saturday in Group C.
Nigeria will thereafter face New Zealand on Jan. 20 before meeting South Africa two days later.
The 16-nation tournament ends in Feberuary 2.
