Chinese customs officials have detained a man attempting to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China by hiding them in his trouser pockets.

The man was apprehended at Futian Harbour, a border crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

During a routine inspection, officials discovered six taped-up cloth bags containing numerous colorful snakes concealed in the man’s lower clothing. Authorities revealed that the man was carrying 104 snakes from five different species, including corn snakes and triangle snakes, both native to North and Central America, not China.

A video released by the customs office shows the man trying to pass through the undeclared goods corridor, followed by customs officers examining six large plastic bags where the writhing reptiles were later placed.

China’s laws strictly prohibit the import of non-native animals, and violators face legal consequences. The customs report did not specify the penalties the man would face for his actions.
