A fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State, has claimed the lives of 86 people, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed on Sunday.

Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of NSEMA, disclosed that 80 victims were buried in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Health Care premises, while five families claimed their relatives’ bodies for private burial. Another victim succumbed to injuries at the healthcare center.

The tragic incident occurred when a tanker transporting fuel from Kaduna to Gwagwalada overturned at the junction, spilling its contents. Despite warnings to keep a safe distance, several residents gathered to scoop fuel.

The situation turned fatal when the tanker exploded, causing catastrophic loss of life, severe injuries, and significant property damage.

NSEMA, in collaboration with Gurara local government officials and community volunteers, organized a mass burial that began at 5 p.m. and lasted until midnight.

Arah confirmed that 55 people sustained injuries in the explosion and are receiving medical treatment. The disaster highlights the risks associated with fuel scooping and underscores the need for public safety awareness.
