Drama as NSA Ribadu recognizes Bayero as Emir of Kano
In a move that deepens the ongoing power struggle, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, publicly addressed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano during an international event in Abuja.
This comes amid the long-standing contention between Bayero and Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, both of whom claim the prestigious Emir title.
The dispute began in March 2020 when former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje deposed Sanusi and installed Bayero.
However, in 2024, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reversed the decision, sacking Bayero and reinstating Sanusi.
Despite his removal, Bayero returned to Kano and set up residence in a mini palace in Nasarawa, where he continued to operate as Emir.
His defiance prompted Governor Yusuf to order his arrest, though heightened security around Bayero’s palace suggested possible federal backing.
Allegations soon followed, with Kano’s Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, accusing Ribadu of facilitating Bayero’s return using two private jets. Ribadu denied these claims, threatening legal action against Gwarzo, who eventually issued an apology.
While both camps have taken the battle to the courts, Ribadu’s recent acknowledgment of Bayero as the Emir of Kano during the News Agency of Nigeria’s international lecture only intensifies the high-stakes rivalry.
A social media user and supporter of the Emir, Rabiu Uba Danzainab posted the 33 seconds video on his X page (rabiuuba4) with the caption, “Ribadu addressed our Emir as the Legitimate Emir of Kano.”
But another user, Ahmed Idris, said, “APC Emir. He better starts a new jihad.”
Another X User, @StudentYahaya, said, “Only the court of a competent jurisdiction can do so, not Ribadu.”
“The legitimate emir is not seated on the high table.. is that?” asked another user @mdhadjii
